Unboxing Dark Magic | Fairyloot April 2019

Fairyloot April Unboxing Dark MagicAnother April book box? Why yes it is. April was a good month for them okay. By now everyone has definitely seen an unboxing post or five of Fairyloot’s Dark Magic month but I want to share mine too.

Its a good excuse to work on my instagram photo game so buckle up and enjoy my unboxing and thoughts of the Dark Magic theme.

For this months book we got a copy of Nocturna by Maya Motayne, which is a young adult Latinx inspired fantasy. The synopsis definitely has my attention and I’d like to read more diverse fantasy for sure. (However, I am also a little concerned as I’ve heard a lot of people say that its very very similar to A Darker Shade of Magic – which I have read.)

With it being a Fairyloot box too the cover is also an exclusive, as you can see here we have a lovely blue design which I actually think looks better than the original red one. We’re also blessed with blue sprayed edges, it’s signed by Maya Motayne, and we got an author letter to accompany it.

Nocturna by Maya Motayne book cover - fairyloot limited edition exclusiveSynopsis:
Magia Para Todos
Magic for all

To Finnian Voy, magic is two things: a knife to hold under the throat of anyone who crosses her, and a disguise she shrugs on as easily as others pull on cloaks. As a talented faceshifter, it’s been years since Finn has seen her own face, and that’s exactly how she likes it. But when she gets caught by a powerful mobster, she’s forced into an impossible mission: steal a legendary treasure from Castallan’s royal palace or be stripped of her magic forever.

To Prince Alfehr, magic is an escape, but one that comes with a price. First in line for the throne after the disappearance of his older brother, Alfie is desperate to find him and bring him home, even if it means dabbling in forbidden magic.

And when Finn and Alfie’s fates collide, they realise magic can be other things too – and the type they accidentally release into the world is something neither of them expects, or understands.

It’s hungry.

Above I have two mostly complete unboxing photographs, the second which has a closer upon some of the smaller items. My favourite item – and the reason I ordered this box – is missing from these photos but is featured further down this post.

Full Item List:
– Themed artwork by Taratjah
– Mister Kindly, Nevernight inspired tea strainer
– Notebook with a Children of Blood and Bone quote on from Stella’s Bookish Art
– Philosopher’s Stone inspired soap by Pretty Suds
– A Curse so Dark and Lonely inspired enamel pin by Literary Emporium
– Character art (on the back of the author letter) by niru.sky
– Grisha trilogy inspired tote bag from KDP Letters & Morgana0anagrom
– Collectable tarot cards from Six of Crows by Emmilinne
– Last but definitely not least, A Darker Shade of Magic inspired book sleeve by Monolie Art

Processed with VSCO with f2 presetThis is just one side of the book sleeve – the other featuring fanart of Kell and Lila – but I absolutely love this item.

It’s a much better quality of fabric compared to their previous book sleeves; thicker and more protective fabric for sure.

But also! It is so big that it can fit The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon inside. How amazing right?!

Overall I enjoyed this box but it was possibly my least favourite of the four I got this month. Simply because some of the items I really have no use for and have started rehoming (the tea strainer, small notebook, and possibly badge). Hopefully the book is fab so I feel like I got my money’s worth!

  1. that edition of Nocturna is *gorgeous* and the book sounds so interesting! and omg that book sleeve looks so cool and I really have to read a darker shade of magic so I can learn more about the Londons!

  2. KITTYY!! That would probably be my fave 🙊 I do agree the blue cover of this book is better.

Apart of that nothing really catches my eye (though it’s not my particular taste of books.. so i haven’t read anything of thoses) so I understand you that it’s your least favorite of the gang!

  3. I really loved Nocturna, but hated the original cover, which is probably why I had such low expectations for it. The book was so much better than I had expected it to be and your copy is SO pretty! I hope you love it like I did!!

  4. ooooooh that cover is indeed gorgeous, and on top of that it has sprayed edges and is signed?? incredible. all the items are so lovely, I love the rich colors (especially the blues), but I can definitely understand that not all of them are to your taste. I hope you enjoy the book!
