Meet the Members

I run an online book club called Books and Tea and I love it dearly. I mean obviously I do or I wouldn’t still be running it.

I also wouldn’t be able to run it without the members as their activity within the club and their love for it too keeps it active and running smoothly.

I’m big on supporting the members and showing my appreciation for them and what better way to do so than to have guest posts from them – and thats what this feature will be.

For now I’m posting one every two weeks and I’ve provided the members with 4 open questions to answer and then a space to talk about anything they’d like – something they’re a fan of, something they do outside of the book club, or something they’re passionate about.

Introducing Ralthuis
Hi! My name is Rens. I joined BooksandTea quite a while ago and am now one of the Admins!

Currently I’m 23 year old and living in Nijmegen in the Netherlands, in a student dorm with a tiny 3 by 4 room but it’s literally (and i mean literally) next to my university so I’m not complaining.

When not reading books I ussually am doing one of my other hobbies.

And I have waaaaaaayyy to many hobbies.. which is usually a good thing, but sometimes it gets hard to manage.
I’ll just make a quick list:
* Books (duh) Mostly fantasy books but I read anything that has letters in it.
* Computer sciency stuff, I always have some programming project going on!
* Piano, this is my main instrument
* I also play Guitar, ukulele, some drums, and recently started to look at flutes
* Sports! I played hockey, now I do sportsclimbing and running.
* Guess I should mention listening to music aswell
There is also more but I don’t wanny make this list too long.

So if you like any of those things join the BooksandTea club and hit me up :)
Oh and I constantly forget to update this but you can add me on GR if you like!

How did you get into the online bookish world?
I never got into blogging, so I just hang out and chat in the Discord group.

But reading books is something I have basically always done. My mom used to read books to me when I still practically a baby and I picked up reading really early.
I was already reading kids books at the age of four or something (The grufallo is still a favourite of mine) and I just never stopped reading.

Tell us about your time on Books and Tea
I joined practically the same week as Paul (Excelsius) who is now one of the other mods. The community was still relatively small back then, but so warm and friendly! I’m glad that even with the growth of the server we have never lost that feeling.

The best thing about Books and Tea is that it has inspired me to read a bunch of books outside of my comfort zone, like pride and prejudice or the mermaids of eriana kwai; which two years ago I wouldn’t even have looked at, but is now one of my all-time favourite series.

Want to tell us something fun?
Well, I am the author of the BooksAndTea bot! Our handy little tool that let’s us pull up links to books on goodreads with a simple command and some other cool stuff (I’m really proud of it).

It is waaayyyyy over engineered and has the capality of doing handling way more than just the BooksandTea server.

All the code is up on github if anyone is interested in looking at it.
