Bout of Books Overall Progress

For our last day of the Bout of Books read-a-thon I decided to not only include my progress of today but of all the days. This was my first read-a-thon that I have ever taken part in and I really enjoyed it, I can’t wait for the next one where I aim to read for longer and read more ;) Today I spent 30 minutes reading, and finishing, Intangible (review on Tuesday) and also chose to pick up Intuition, may as well as I have all that time left over.

When I first made my goals post for Bout of Books I aimed to read 4 books, which I more than achieved. I ended up reading different books than selected due to reviews needed and getting my hands on graphic novels that I didn’t expect to have for a lot longer. Below I’ll include synopsis’ of the books I read.

Specials by Scott Westerfeld: Special Circumstances. Tally though they were a rumor, but now she’s one of the them. A Special. A super-amped fighting machine, engineered to keep the uglies down and the pretties stupid. But maybe being perfectly programmed with strength and focus isn’tbetter than anything she’s ever known. Tally still has memories of something else. But it’s easy for her to tune that out—until she’s offered a chance to stamp out the rebels of the New Smoke permanently. It all comes down to one last choice: listen to that tiny, faint heartbeat, or carry out the mission she’s programmed to complete. Either way, Tally’s world will never be the same. (full series review to come once I’ve read Extras)

Batman: The Killing Joke by Alan Moore: The Killing Joke, one of my favorite Batman stories ever, stirred a bit of controversy because the story involves the Joker brutally, pointlessly shooting Commissioner Gordon’s daughter in the spine. This is a no-holds-barred take on a truly insane criminal mind, masterfully written by British comics writer Alan Moore. The art by Brian Bolland is so appealing that his depiction of the Joker became a standard and was imitated by many artists to follow.

Channel Zero by Brian Wood: Special interest groups have bullied the government into passing the Clean Act, effectively killing freedom of speech and silencing the country into submission. TV and God become one and the same as America wages its own holy war against its citizens. Meet Jennie 2.5, media slut turned info-terrorist, out to save the country from itself, and restore free will and self expression. Hailed internationally as ground-breaking work in the field of sequential art, Channel Zero challenges and tests the limits, combining current events and no-future shock into a dark, paranoid, deep-ambient visual narrative. (review to come)

Intangible by J. Meyers: Twins Sera and Luke Raine have a well-kept secret—she heals with a touch of her hand, he sees the future. All their lives they’ve helped those in need on the sly. They’ve always thought of their abilities as being a gift. Then Luke has a vision that Sera is killed. That gift they’ve always cherished begins to feel an awful lot like a curse. Because the thing about Luke’s ability? He’s always right. And he can’t do anything about it. (review to come)

Intuition by J. Meyers: Luke and his twin sister Sera have unusual abilities. Hers is a gift—she can heal with a touch of her hand. His is a curse—he can see the future but he can’t do anything about it. On a hike up the mountain, Luke has a vision unlike any other—one that leaves him terrified. Knowing that it will come true—and that he must do everything in his power to stop it—leaves his own future uncertain. (review to come)

Pandora Hearts Volume 1 by Jun Mochizuki: The air of celebration surrounding fifteen-year-old Oz Vessaliuss coming-of-age ceremony quickly turns to horror when he is condemned for a sin about which he know nothing. Thrown into the Abyss – an eternal prison from which here is no escape – Oz meets a young girl named Alice who is not what she seems. Now that the relentless cogs of fate have begun to turn, will they lead only to crushing despair for Oz, or will Alice provide him with some shred of hope?

Bout of Books Read-a-thon Day 6

Saturdays are always my bad reading days as I’m at my Dads and he wakes me up at 1pm. Yes wakes me up. I clearly need the sleep though? and then I spend the day until 4pm with him and my little sister (this week we watched MIB and The Witches which my sister thought were fab) so by the time I get home most of the day is over and I have to catch up with all you guys first ;) Any how I finished Channel Zero which was FAB! and I was aiming to finish Intangible too but my boyfriend was sleepy and made me stop reading :(

The mini-challenge for today is being hosted by Smash Attack Reads which is called “Book Spine Poetry” which sounds totally interesting right? Yep. The aim is to use the spine of books to create a poem from their titles, you are allowed to use an extra word for every book used (for example if I were to use 6 books I can have 6 extra words within my poem). I have selected the books I originally selected to read this week and other books that I want to make a start on before this month is up. Hopefully I get something decent.

Specials Invisible Monsters
reside with Paper Towns.
A Blood Seduction by Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter Kicks Ass.
This is The Perks of Being a Wallflower of death.
Okay my attempt was pretty lame and I moved the S from the end of Specials to the end of Kick in Kick Ass :P

Its not cheating, it’s magic.

18052012: Bout of Books Read-a-thon Day 5

I finished reading the first “chapter” of Channel Zero during the early hours of this morning and I adore it so much, I also read more of it and I’m pretty happy that I’m a good 100 pages into a graphic novel and haven’t seen an overly sexualised female, which is good. I also read all of Batman: The Killing Joke today, which is fantastic as well as getting up to 80% through Intangible which I’m pretty sure I’ll finish tomorrow.

The mini-challenge for today is being hosted by The Reading Housewives which is titled Books & Shoes. We have to take any book we like and match up a character in the book or the cover of the book to a shoe. The requirement is to only do one pairing, but feel free to do as many as you like. More pairings don’t give you more entries and you don’t have to do a collage like The Reading Housewives did but feel free to be creative. You also have to add the picture to your Bout of books 4.0 update or goal post OR post on Twitter using the #boutofbooks hashtag so other participates can see it. Only one is required but feel free to post in both places.
This mini-challenge is not at all catered for me :’) I have no idea about shoes. I own three pairs of shoes, all Doc Martens. I am a terrible girl. Luckily I can relate this challenge into the book I am currently reading and into my knowledge of Doc Martens. Ha!

Above is Jennie 2.5 from the Graphic Novel Channel Zero and she is an all round general bad ass, fighting for America’s freedom and to get rid of the “Clean Act” which is basically the American government controls to media in every sense and scary possibility, the American population no longer would recognise the outside world because they’re not allowed to know what is going on unless it appeals to the government. Which means the only possible shoes she could have are these pair of beauties to kick ass in. (P.S they actually have a zip up the inside to make it a hell of a lot easier to put on and they’re super comfy)

17052012: Bout of Books Read-a-thon Day 4

Phew, can’t believe we are already at Day 4, its passing so quickly! Turns out I didn’t do a lot of reading today and that is my own fault, I simply didn’t feel up to reading and instead spent time on Skyrim and Mass Effect. But in that short time I did spend reading I managed to read a good chunk of Intangible which I’m almost 60% of the way through now.

The mini-challenge for today is being hosted by Book Goonie and unfortunately I can’t actually enter as it is US only but the jist of it is to name the 16 zombie books she has shown the covers of. As I can’t take part I’m going to my own thing right now and share some zombie related things that I love.

The Resident Evil film series, I know a lot of gamers steer clear of them because they’re “shit and nothing like the games” but that is completely stupid because they’re only based off the games and it would be completely boring to watch an exact replica of something you’ve already played through, right? They’re an amazing series, Milla Jovovich is incredibly beautiful and I can’t wait for the next instalment later this year.

Next up is the Resident Evil games, of course. I’ve played watched the boyfriend playthrough 1 and 2, completed all of 5 last year and seen bits and pieces of the others. They’re really amazing and can’t wait to get my hands on 6 later this year and even considering purchasing RE: Operation Racoon City even though its a console import and has a lot of bad reviews (mostly due to the bulky controls with it being a console import).

Dead Inside: Do Not Enter by Lost Zombies is such a good collaged zombie book, I reviewed it last year which you can read here and you can see images of some of the pages.

The Walking Dead graphic novel is amazing too, which I haven’t properly read, just shadow read as my boyfriends slowly been mooching his way through it and I plan to pick up my copy sooner rather than later, its very different to the television show – which is also worth checking out – but still fantastic.

Handling the Undead by John Ajvide Lindqvist is a book I purchased earlier this year after reading Let the Right One In which was incredible and I seriously looking forward to being able to pick it up.

The Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z by Max Brooks should also be put to the top of any Zombie lovers to read list.

I’ve tried to steer clear of those that were listed on the mini-challenge. Happy reading!

16052012: Bout of Books Read-a-thon Day 3

I stayed up late last night to finish reading Specials by Scott Westerfeld which took me 29 minutes for the last 64 pages. After I’ve posted this post, drank a cup of tea and had some breakfast I am going to read Intangible by J. Meyers, I’m aware this wasn’t originally on my list for this read-a-thon but I don’t want to put it off because I hadn’t listed it and because I’m at my boyfriends and left all my other books at home. Ooops. Hooray for taking my kindle everywhere with me for back up. In fact I think some of the books I did list are on my kindle but I’m too excited to finish this one to care. Whilst waiting for my breakfast to be ready I read 43 pages of Channel Zero by Brian Wood for 12 minutes. Breakfast was yummy, but Intangible is even yummier, still drawn to Jonah even though I’m not 100% sure where he lies, I’ve read 19% more of it in 53 minutes

The mini-challenge for today is being hosted by Books Devoured and we have to choose any book cover and Re-Title it! You can choose anything you like and go the serious or humorous route!
The RoadSo I decided to select a book from my currently reading pile which is 10 books high. I went with The Road by Cormac McCarthy simply because its a marmite book – you love it or hate it. I’ve read 5 pages, if that, and part of the latter group but I WILL not give up. It may be sitting on hold for a while but one day I will get to it, one day. *nods* I promise.

From what I’ve read and seen (I caved and watched the movie as I was supposed to read it for a book club last year) I’ve chosen to Re-Title it too…

The Journey of Death.

15052012: Bout of Books Read-a-thon Day 2

Well I feel a lot more rested today and feel I will be able to acomplish a lot more without my eyes going funky on me. I’ve been reading Specials by Scott Westerfeld again today and hope that I will finish it, in fact there is no hope because I plan too! At the moment I have read for 1 hour and 17 minutes and gotten through 155 pages. (Which means I read more than yesterday but in less time, sweet. And by read more I mean 2 pages ha.)
Overall Update:
Number of Books Read Today: 1 (Specials)

Also for today we’ve been given a mini-challenge by Nyx Book Reviews to answers either Part One: Share your most shocking, embarrassing or funny book related story OR Part Two: Answer all of these “this or that” questions – Physical book or eBook? Paperback or Hardcover? Reality or Make-believe? Adult or Young Adult? Dog ears or Bookmarks? Breaking the spine or Barely opening the book? Tea or Coffee? Reading in bed or On the couch? Series or Standalone? Original or TV Adaption? Defy motion sickness or Audiobooks? Author crushes or Who-was-that-guy-again? Interview or Guest post?

I have actually chosen to answer both. First of all I don’t have embarrassing or a funny book related story, or at least none that I can think of but I do have a shocking one. At least one that is shocking to me. I bought a copy of Stephanie Meyers The Host and after owning it for a month I still hadn’t picked it up, a friend asked to borrow it and as I knew I wouldn’t be picking it up soon I lent it to him. He eventually returned it, with dog eared pages! Personally I find that extremely shocking because I wouldn’t feel comfortable doing it with my own book never mind someone else?!
P.S I still haven’t read the book as the dog eared pages make me sick to look at.

Now time for this or that

Physical book or eBook? Physical all the way, I just can’t get enough of the feel, smell and look!
Paperback or Hardcover? Paperback, sometimes the Hardcovers are just too heavy to be lugging around but they’re often more visually appealing so I’m a little tied here.
Reality or Make-believe? Make-believe or I wouldn’t be getting my Vampire fix :)
Adult or Young Adult? Either or, I’m pretty easy going with picking up books.
Dog ears or Bookmarks? As hinted at earlier, bookmarks. Do not even think about defacing my books!
Breaking the spine or Barely opening the book? I guess it depends on the lighting really, cause if its not REALLY good then you’re going to have to break the spine. I don’t mind too much with breaking the spine but I wont purposefully do it.
Tea or Coffee? Tea, I don’t like the taste of Coffee (I love the smell) and I’m not allowed too much caffeine anyway.
Reading in bed or On the couch? Bed, my bed is so comfy. I live in my bed.
Series or Standalone? If you’d asked me last year I’d have said standalone purely because I’m so bad with finishing series but I’ve made a serious improvement on that this year and enjoy being able to read about characters you love for a longer time.
Original or TV Adaption? Original I guess :)
Defy motion sickness or Audiobooks? I don’t get motion sickness
Author crushes or Who-was-that-guy-again? I’ve never had a crush on an author… but I do favour certain authors books?
Interview or Guest post? Guest post :) I like being introduced to new bloggers.

14052012: Bout of Books Read-a-thon Day 1

We are drawing to an end of the first 24 hours of the Bout of books read-a-thon challenge, or at least it is for me. At the end of each day I am going to post here what I have managed to accomplish, as its not quite midnight yet I will be popping back later to update – updated now!
Today I was over tired due to lack of sleep so it’s been completely my own fault and didn’t really feel up to doing, well anything but I chose to pick up Specials by Scott Westerfeld with the knowledge that the previous books in the series were easy reads for me. At the moment I have read for 1 hour and 30 minutes and gotten through 153 pages which I’m pretty happy with.

Overall Update:
Number of Books Read Today: 1 (Specials)

Also for today we got given a mini-challenge to answer the following questions: “What do you like best about read-a-thons? Do you have any read-a-thon traditions or rituals? If this is your first read-a-thon, what do you like so far?”

Well first of all, this is my first read-a-thon and I chose to get involved because its set when I have no college which meant I wouldn’t have to worry about cramming in reading time, but what specifically drew me to this one was because it isn’t a challenge per say as you can set your own goals and there is no force to make sure you read a certain amount, reach a certain goal etc etc – in other words its fun and laid back. This pretty much answers the last question! With it being my first read-a-thon I do not yet have any traditions or rituals but from now on I am going to make sure I get a decent amount of sleep before hand so my eyes don’t go fuzzy and hope to G-d before then that I have gotten glasses because I was actually in some pain today. Also making sure there is plenty of tea in the house as I love to drink tea whilst I read. I guess a god recomendation tradtion is to turn your bloody laptop off too! haha.

Enjoy your week.
