What is World Book Day?

WBD is a registered charity on a mission to give every child and young person a book of their own. It’s also a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) it’s a celebration of reading. In fact, it’s the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world.

This is the 22nd year there’s been a World Book Day, and on 7th March 2019, children of all ages will come together to appreciate reading. Very loudly and very happily. The main aim of World Book Day in the UK and Ireland is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own.

My Fave Childhood Reads

I wanted to really sit down and think outside the box for this answer. I’m sure there will be plenty of Harry Potters and Magic Faraway Trees which I too loved but here’s a chance for me to shout about some other childhood faves for me.

Ms Wiz series by Terence Blacker, illustrated by Tony Ross

Whilst creating the list I not only found out it was ridiculously hard to find decent cover images, but that this series is also unavailable to purchase these days which makes me rather sad.

Ms Wiz is an 18 book series that I loved to read from the library when I was much younger. She was probably my first introduction to a powerful, independent and witchy woman. I loved reading about her magical adventures and very much wanted to follow her anywhere.

I only read two books from the Edgar & Ellen series by Charles Ogden [amazon | wordery] but I adored these.

In fact I think I even have the Hardback copies in the house somewhere still because of this.

They were the perfect gothic fantasy reads for a child being told no black isn’t something she can wear every day.

The mischief Edgar & Ellen got up too (even in just the two books I read) was a nice change of pace and very humourous.

Next up is another series but I believe I only read the one book; Judy Moody Predicts the Future by Megan McDonald [amazon]. Ands it’s not even the first in a series?! Look at how care free of a reader I was.

I remember being obsessed with this book as my copy had shiny bits on the front and I was really into the idea of being able to predict the future.

Mood rings really were all the rage at the time I read this book and I was dying to have my own extra special powers one day too. I easily read this at least 5 times.

Angels Unlimited series by Annie Dalton | amazon + wordery

A bit of a change of pace here as this series is classed as YA on Goodreads but I would personally class it as Teen at the very oldest.

Anyway I read books 5 and 6 from this series before returning to read the first book. Never read any more than that as the library didn’t have them when I went in so I moved on.

Kind of sad I didn’t pursue the series further as it was really fun reading about Mel who was a strong, time-travelling angel defeating bad guys!

From what I remember returning to book 1 was really nice after the other two I read because it showed where she started and even from those books I could see good character development.

Last but not least I’m going to pick The Sleepover Club [amazon | wordery] which is written by a variety of authors and also had a spin-off series too (Frankie I love you). It’s also 59 books long? Wow.

I’ll be honest I devoured a lot of these books during Primary School from their library but I didn’t really track which ones. This cover really stands out to me as familiar though.

I was very much obsessed with these books and I think this had something to do with the fact the girls are all very different but still have a great friendship. Sometimes you just need to read something soft and sweet.

Okay I lied, I’m going to drop two honorary mentions to Jacqueline Wilson & The Spiderwick Chronicles.
