Micro Brew is hosted by Allie @ Hexen Librarian and on the 1st of each month she’ll give us some prompts or questions to answer. It’s a fun way to promote something you love.

Best thing is you can take part when you’re ready! So your answers can go live on the designated days or during week when it suits you best.

To take part all you have to do is tag Allie so she can see your responses, visit Melanie (part of the prompt creation) on twitter, include the header and an explanation, and complete the themed prompt.

February 4: What’s your favorite urban fantasy novel? Sell it. What about it makes it your favorite?

So Urban Fantasy is also the read-along theme for March’s choice and this is what made me realise how few books I knew that were UF.

I honestly don’t think its a case of I don’t read them and more of I just don’t look at sub-genres all too often. If its fantasy, its fantasy. Y’know?

When research I found out that my favourite series from high school is actually UF so thats the series I want to introduce you too now; Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr.

The series takes place over 5 books and each book we get to know more about a fae court, so by the end you have a well rounded understanding of the courts fighting for the ruling power.

We primarily follows Aislinn, a human, woo-ed into the fae world to become the next Summer Queen. She’s one of my favourite characters due to her strength and will power to do right not only for herself and the human world, but also for the court she finds herself in the centre of. Whilst she does have alot to battle with, particularly the power and misleading-ness of the fae she is able to manouver her way through this series that provides her with an ending that I was always rooting for.

Honestly this series is probably where my obsession with piercings (hi cute goth boyfriend Seth) and tattoos started (Ink Exchange being a whole book centered around magical tattoos for the Dark Court) so it gets to keep a place in my heart always. Even if Keenan is the most problematic character to exist.

I’m going to leave this open and not tag people here but instead if you find yourself here reading this then I am encouraging  you to take part too.

Whats your favourite Urban Fantasy?

  1. I read Wicked Lovely in high school, too, but never continued with the series. For the life of me, I can’t remember if it’s because I disliked the book or just got sidetracked, as that often happens. Kind of makes me want to do a reread sometime!

  2. My sister used to read The Wicked Lovely series back in high school and I tried reading the book we have at home, but it never caught my attention (of course, that’s probably more due to the fact that it was the third book in the series than the series being boring).

(One of) My favourite Urban Fantasy series is The Iron Chronicles by Kevin Hearne!

  3. Those are gorgeous book covers! The only ‘fairy’ series I’ve read was the Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa, and that wasn’t urban fantasy at all (I’m… pretty sure…) so this looks like a super fun series to pick up and read!

  4. Though I havent read much fantasy, it’s the same for me! I class « fantasy » as just fantasy and forget the rest xD this serie looks quite interresting, thanks for sharing!

  5. I thought this was about beer :(

Oooh the Wicked Lovely series look so pretty! also Fae and piercings and tattoo’s. Ok I’m sold *adds these to my tbr* damnit Lauren :’)

  6. I haven’t heard anything about this series so far but it sounds like something I could really enjoy? Ugh, more books for my poor wishlist!! ^^
And I’m the same. Fantasy is fantasy and I rarely look at the subgenre (probably because I’m very bad at categorizing anything correctly) but spontaneously two series I do quite enjoy are the Mercy Thompson books by Patricia Briggs and The Elemental Assassin books by Jennifer Estep (though you probably shouldn’t binge read, as I recap a LOT and if you read them abck to back it’S quite annoying)

  7. oooooh, urban fantasy is allegedly one of my favorite fantasy subgenres, but I absolutely agree – when I’m picking out books, fantasy is just fantasy is just fantasy ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I think I’ve seen the Wicked Lovely books floating around but never actually read them, I might have to give them a chance now!

  8. I have never come across this series before! I love urban fantasy. My favourite UF series is The Dresden Files and I can’t wait for the next book.
