Comet in Moominland was a present from my lovely Finnish friend Tecsie along with some other good from Finland.
I had intended to read it straight away but I ended up being very lucky as it won the vote for Books and Tea’s read-along for January.
I don’t read a whole lot of Middle Grade books but I’ve seen a lot of art of the Moomin characters and was pretty excited to start it.
Comet in Moominland is listed as the second book in the series on Goodreads but my copy has #1 on the side so figure that one out? ahah.
Either way it doesn’tt really effect the reading order, there is mention that a Great Flood happened before this book starts but that is about it.
This book follows Moomintroll and his friends as they travel very far to speak to some scientist to find out more about the Comet that is on its way to destroy the valley.
I really enjoyed reading this adventure because the world that is created is very vivid with its description and little illustrations to go along.
I also think the way the characters interacted was great too as small children will definitely relate to how Moomintroll is – ready to impress, eager to be the leader, but also scared because there is still so much he doesn’t know yet.
On top of this he’s also really cute because he’s insistant that girls aren’t worth his time, but the moment he meets Snork Maiden he can’t wait to impress her and give her pretty things. So cute.
If you’re not big into middle grade books I’d probably say this might not be for you as the writing style and sentence structure is definitely geared more towards that age range – as expected.
Its a super fun read but its unlikely I’ll go out of my way to read the rest of the series.

I was wondering what the deal was with the book either being the first or the second one but it sounds like it reads like the first in the series? I don’t read middle grade much but my younger sister does so I might recommend this one to her! It sounds so sweet.
