Books and Tea Book Club | 2018 Chat Overview

batthing

Hey book readers,
I’m just making this post to give a more informative run down on my book club – Books and Tea. I’m sure by now you’ve seen the monthly announcements of the read-alongs or maybe not. But if so, tada! I’m doing a big update post on whats what in the world of Discord and my book club.Anyone who is 18 or older is welcome to join, just click here.

Events

The main type of event we do are read-alongs with a few read-a-thons dotted throughout the year, and then during Summer and December we do a Secret Santa Book Exchange. We also currently have a travelling book project wrapping up and its likely we’ll host another later in 2018.

What is a read-along?

A read-along is where a group of people all read the same book at the same time. And we host at least one a month, with nominations and voting from you guys to ensure something popular is selected.

What is a read-a-thon?

A read-a-thon is where during a set time you aim to read as much as you personally can. There will often be little tasks to do during the time too.

What do you talk about in them?

So it might seem overwhelming to see a long list but late last year Discord added the update for channel categories makes it a lot easier to organise and allows for members to bulk mute areas they have no interest in as we do accommodate a lot of topics.

I’m not going to go into what each and every channel is about as the #announcement channel has a full list of every possible channel you could have access too. So I’m just gonna do a run down of the categories instead and hopefully that gets some of you interested.

BOOK NOOK
Here you can talk specifically about books, specific chats for graphic novels, nonfiction, and adaptations. As well as somewhere to discuss spoilers (feel free to mute to avoid them), ask for recommendations, and to share any bookish news you see on the web.

READ-ALONGS
Here I have a channel to nominate books for a months read-along genre and to vote on them. As well as having the designated (and hidden) chats for each winning book.

LIT FANDOMS
As we have so many members a few fandoms pop up often to allow for a space for those members to discuss their loved series/authors as often and as much as they want we have hidden chats for the few that pop up a lot. Current author chats are Brandon Sanderson, Terry Pratchett , Sarah J Maas, Diana Gabaldon, S. C. Parris, Leigh Bardugo, and one for Harry Potter fandom too.

BLOGGER HUB
As a lot of readers are also bloggers if you sign up for the reviewer role you can leave all your social media links in a channel, search for other bloggers to collaborate with on posts, and leave opportunities you find out about in too. We also have one public chat for those who want to start blogging but need to ask for help with specific things!

WRITING CAFE
A lot of readers are also writers, I’m not one of them but we do have a space for members to discuss their projects, a writing prompt chat, to share your bullet journals, and of course what goes better with a writing cafe but a tea chat!

CONTENT SHARE
I’m all for supporting our community so I have dedicated chats for members to share their blogs, vlogs, sheflies, and pets (which can be posted to our designated pet twitter)!

READING CHALLENGES
This area has been deleted and we moved the one challenge that was getting attention into the Book Nook area.

TRAVELLING BOOK PROJECTS
Lastly, there is no need to worry about this as all these chats are hidden to the members taking part in the travelling book project. I’m sure I’ll host another in 2018 though!

But Lauren, that is a lot of chats?
As an admin yes there are a lot of chats for myself to view and keep up with but here is the cool thing, as a new member you can’t see any of the chosen read-alongs, lit fandoms, or travelling book project chats. And you’ll only see a few of the writing and blogging ones upon joining too.

You see what is relevant to you.
If you want to sign up for a read-along, sweet just ask and we’ll add you into the role (or you can read the welcome chat to see how you can add yourself in – type !howtojoinroles in a chat too to get it on command).

Roles
The function of roles in Discord means that I can set it so only the members with that role can see certain chats.
The images below is taken from our welcome chat which might help you to understand roles a little better.
The ones above you gain when you XP by talking. So at the Book Drake level is when you’re able to upload images (lower ranks not able to avoid any bots/spam members posting vile things). These ranks main function is to allow the staff to see who’s active and to limit giveaways and book exchanges to those members too.We have two lots of roles to help tailor the server to members needs:

Lit Fandoms are likely to change throughout the year as we create them once we see a lot of members discussing a book or author to help provide them with a space they can discuss in depth the fandom without it being too much for members who do not care for them. The other roles that you can join are related to the monthly read-alongs.
I think I’ve covered everything now. If you have any questions please ask so I can update this post.
