Books and Tea Book Club

Books and Tea Book Club

Hey book readers,
I’m just making this post to give a more informative run down on the events hosted on my Books and Tea Discord chat but before I get to that I’ll tell you about what the chat is. Anyone is welcome to join, just click here.

Events

At the moment we host a few different events. The main type of event we do are read-alongs with a few read-a-thons towards the end of the year. We currently have a travelling book project, and during Summer and December we do a Secret Santa Book Exchange.

What is a read-along?

A read-along is where a group of people all read the same book at the same time. And we host at least one a month, with nominations and voting from you guys to ensure something popular is selected.

2017 Schedule
January: Popular YA – Six of Crows Read-along
February: Romance – Aristotle + Dante Read-along
March: Staff Choice – Ice Massacre by Tiana Warner read-along
April: #WeMissYou Auto/Biography Genre “Read-along”; to those of you 2016 took from us
May: #OwnVoices – The Bone Witch Read-along
June: Support Our Author – Any book by S.C. Parris Read-along – continuing due to popularity
July: Science Fiction – 1984 and The Martian Read-along, + Travelling Book Project 2.0 started
August: Vaginal Fantasy – Outlander Read-along
September: Japanese Light Novel – Your Name Read-along
October: Horror Readathon
November: Video Game themed Read-along – Infernal City, + Thank Book It’s Over Readathon
December: Secret Santa Book Exchange + Ice Kingdom Read-along

Text Channels

What do you talk about in them?

#welcome: Read through this chat for rules, channel info, bot help, and events. Any new announcements will be posted here too with the @everyone tag.#general: Talk here about anything, book related or not. Get to know the other book club members.

#general-part-two: As we now have a lot of members, we created a secondary general chat to allow for more talk should general be too crowded and you don’t want to interrupt.

#book-talk: If general is moving too quick and you want to talk specifically about books, or ask a bookish question, and it not get lost use this channel.

#book-market: A place to trade and sell books, or bookish items with other members. (Open only to those ranked Book Drakes or higher)

#book-recommendations: Post links to books you think someone might like here or ask for recommendations.

#book-spoilers: If you want to discuss a book with someone and know it could spoil it for others please use this channel OR if you just need to talk openly about a book and might spoil it use this chat. Worried about making use of this in case of earlier spoilers mentioned? Its okay I’ll empty the chat weekly.

#content-share: A chat for members to share any content they’ve created or stumbled across that they like. This is a way for each of us to support other members creations or blog posts.

#microrevew: For Melanie to post about the new microreview topics and for members to share their posts.

#writers-hub: A little cafe for y’all to talk about your writing things.

#read-a-long-prep: For nominating and voting books for our monthly read-a-longs.

#cosmere: As we have a lot of Brandon Sanderson fans in the server we made a chat just for them to avoid spoilers for other members.

#”book-name”-readalong: A chat for those taking part in the read-a-long to discuss the book at hand without spoiling it for those who didn’t want to take part.

#video-games-chat: As we have members who’re here solely for books, keep all video game talk here please.

#bot-channel: To sign up and join read-alongs or play about with other bot commands.

#staff-chat: Only viewable for the staff members so we can discuss any changes we need to make.

#unitedfinland-tbp: A chat for those taking part in the UK + Finland travelling book project so we can let each other know how the books are going and when we’ve posted a book on to the next member.

But Lauren, that is a lot of chats?

As an admin yes there are a lot of chats for myself to view and keep up with but heres the cool thing, as a new member you can’t see any of the read-a-long or travelling book project chats.

You see what is relevant to you. If you want to sign up for a read-a-long, sweet just ask and we’ll add you into the role (or you can read the welcome chat to see how you can add yourself in).

Roles
The function of roles in Discord means that I can set it so only the members with that role can see certain chats, and if you want to be sure to talk to everyone in that role you can @”rolenamehere”.
The images below is taken from our welcome chat which might help you to understand roles a little better.
We have two lots of roles, ones you gain XP for by talking. So at the Book Drake level is when you’re able to upload images (lower ranks not able to avoid any bots/spam members posting vile things) and can access the #book-market

The other roles we have are joinable ones which gain you access to other hidden chats. These are all available for any member to join or leave as and when they please.
I think I’ve covered everything now. If you have any questions please ask so I can update this post.
